icon 1900 Meiji 33 Toyoji Iida, engineer of the Railway Department, conducted a feasibility survey of the Alishan Forest Railway and Tomijiro Ogasawara investigated the resources of Alishan forest.
icon 1903 Meiji 36 The Taiwan Governor-General Office commissioned Shitaro Kawai to plan Alishan development and select the railway route.
icon 1904 Meiji 37 The Alishan Forest Development Project was rejected due to the financial shortage caused by the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05.
icon 1906 Meiji 39 The spiral route uphill section on Mt. Duli was completed in October, with Liyuanliao Station as the terminus. Introduced Lima Shay 13m.t. steam train into Taiwan for the first time.

icon 1913 Taisho 2 Extended the railway to Zhaoping, 71.9km long in total.

icon 1927 Showa 2 Alishan was selected as one of the "Eight Wonders of Taiwan" by the Taiwan Daily News.
icon 1932 Showa 7 Zizhong Line was extended to Xingaokou as the terminus of passenger transportation of the Alishan Forest Railway.
icon 1934 Showa 9 The section between Zizhong and Dodojia was completed. Terminus Dodojia is 2,584m in elevation.
icon 1945 Showa 20 Japan made an unconditional surrender in August. The Forestry Bureau of Department of Agriculture and Forest of the Taiwan Provincial Executive Office took over Alishan Forest in November.

icon 1956 ROC 45 The sacred tree on Alishan was hit by thunder and on fire.
icon 1962 ROC 51 The Diesel Express ran from Chiayi and Fenqihu for the first time.
icon 1963 ROC 52 Transformed The Alishan Forest Railway into a tourism railway. The Zhongxing Express began to run on the railway.
icon 1969 ROC 58 Introduced the DL25 to DL30 diesel locomotives. Recruited female in-train attendants for the Zhongxing Express for the first time.
icon 1971 ROC 60 The "Guangfu Express" ran on the railway irregularly.
icon 1973 ROC 62 The "Guangfu Express" provided regular service for the railway, uphill and downhill, two times a day. Beimen Station was completed in October.
icon 1978 ROC 67 Railway services of the Alishan Forest Railway was disrupted. The foundation of Dongpu Line was transformed into New Central Cross-Island Highway.
icon 1982 ROC 71 Changed the Zhongxing Express into direct express trains to shorten travel time from Chiayi to Alishan to two hours and fifty minutes. Steam trains were used for Mianyue Line, which shocked home and abroad.
icon 1984 ROC 73 Launched the "999" package. The Alishan Express air-conditioned train ran twice a day (uphill and downhill). On May 21, construction of Chushan Line began. In August, Zhaoping Compartment Hotel was completed. For environmental reasons, trains for Mianyue Line were changed to diesel trains, and all steam trains were decommissioned.
icon 1986 ROC 75 On January 13, Zhuzhan Line was opened. Became a "sister railway" of Oigawa Railway, Japan.
icon 1989 ROC 78 Alishan Forest District Office was withdrawn. The Railway Management Section established under Chiayi Forest District Office to take over the work.
icon 1998 ROC 87 On June 29, the sacred tree was felled. The Shihou in Mianyue became the new landmark.
icon 1999 ROC 88 The Alishan 26 steam train was reinstated at Beimen Station, which shocked the international media. The Alishan Forest Railway was badly damaged by the Chichi Quake on September 21. The service of Mianyue Line was disrupted. Alishan New Station was demolished. Railway services were passed to Zhaoping Station.
icon 2001 ROC 90 On December 22, Organized the "The Alishan Forest Railway 90th Anniversary & Tourism Painted Train Inaugural Journey" ceremony. The new spacious and comfortable painted train began operations.
On December 7, The Alishan Forest Railway was awarded the "Taiwan Top Ten Historic Civil Works Award" from the Chinese Institute of Engineers, Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, Taiwan Construction Research Institute, and Yu Zhao-zhong Foundation.
On December 17, the Council of Cultural Affairs (now Ministry of Culture) of the Executive Yuan selected Chushan Station as one of the One Hundred Historical Sites in Taiwan.
icon 2002 ROC 91 On April 12, former President Chen Shui-bian toured Alishan in a VIP car of the Alishan Forest Railway and praised the railway.
icon 2003 ROC 92 In January opened the temporary Alishan platform.
icon 2004 ROC 93 On June 11, the Council of Cultural Affairs (now Ministry of Culture) of the Executive Yuan listed The Alishan Forest Railway as a qualified site for the "12 Potential World Cultural Heritage Sites in Taiwan". Steam locomotive 31 was decommissioned and replaced by a diesel engine. Opened Chiayi Garage Park after environmental straightening up, planation, greening, and beautification for public recreation on holidays. The park became a new landmark in Chiayi City.
icon 2005 ROC 94 Built vintage compartments with Formosan cypress and Taiwania, rare wood in the world, for the railway.
icon 2006 ROC 95 On June 19, the Forestry Bureau signed the contract for "Private Participation in the Alishan Forest Railway Operation and Alishan Forest Recreational Area Construction and Operation Project" with Hungtu Alishan International Development Co., Ltd. to commission the operation of the Alishan Forest Railway and Alishan Forest Recreational Area to a private enterprise.
Two diesel locomotives purchased in December 2004 were delivered and joined the service.

On July 15, the inaugural ceremony of the Formosan cypress compartments for steam trains traveling between Chiayi and Jhuci of the Alishan Forest Railway was held. The service of these Formosan cypress compartments began on July 21 on trains traveling between Chiayi and Jhuci on Saturdays and Sunday.
On September 13, Alishan New Station was completed and opened.
icon 2008 ROC 97 On June 19 the Forestry Bureau officially handed over the operations of the Alishan Forest Railway to Hungtu Alishan International Development Co., Ltd.
icon 2009 ROC 98 On August 8 typhoon Morakot devastated The Alishan Forest Railway, and the entire railway was shut down.
icon 2010 ROC 99 On March 23, the Forestry Bureau rescinded the commissioning operation contract with Hungtu Alishan International Development Co., Ltd.
On June 19, services of Chushan and Shenmu lines of the Alishan Forest Railway recovered.
On June 25, the "Revival of the Alishan Forest Railway" was held. Officials of the Executive Yuan, ministers, magistrates, mayors, and local gentries were invited to wittiness the revival of the tourism industry in Alishan area.
On December 19, the Alishan Forest Railway 99th Anniversary & Engine Workshop Wooden Sculpture Museum and Multifunctional Exhibition Area Completion Ceremony was held.
icon 2011 ROC 100 On January 1, the "Sunrise Impression Concert" was held at Dueigaoyue Railway Station, with over ten thousand audiences.

On December 25, the Alishan Forest Railway Centenary & Memorial Stamp Publishing Ceremony was held. The local train service for Zhaoping Line also began.
icon 2012 ROC 101 On January 20, the local train service for Shenmu Line recovered.
On August 16, the Alishan Forest Railway Takeover Preparatory Office of Taiwan Railway Administration was established. On December 23, train services between Chiayi and Jhuci (flatland line) recovered.
icon 2013 ROC 102 On March 13, the Alishan Forest Railway Preparatory Office of Taiwan Railway Administration was established.
On April 20 became "sister railway" with Kurobe Gorge Railway of Japan. On April 21, the new building of Zhaoping Station was opened.
On April 26, the Forestry Bureau signed the "Executive Contract on the Request for Assistance in Operating The Alishan Forest Railway from Taiwan Railway Administration".
On May 1, the Taiwan Railway Administration of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications officially assisted in operating The Alishan Forest Railway.
icon 2014 ROC 103 On January 10, The Alishan Forest Railway Preparatory Office was restricted as The Alishan Forest Railway Administrative Office. On January 27, the Chiayi-Fenqihu Railway Services Recovery Ceremony was held, and railway services re-started on the following day.
