Major Tasks in The Future

* To promote Integrated Station Development projects in BOT mode
  At present, Taichung, Tainan, Hsinchu, Chiayi, Changhua and Hualien Station Buildings are being planned.
* The renewal of rail structure to ensure operation safety
  Owing to heavy traffic, the tracks have become deformed through deterioration. Furthermore, the Heavy Duty rails laid during the Electrification Railway project on the western line have reached fatigue limit, the ballast rail bed mud content has reached replacement level. The plan for replacement requires 12 years starting in 1991, at a cost of about 18.355 billion NT Dollars.
* Improvement of Railway Safety Equipment
  TRA will renew the entire Automatic Protection System, to complete the island wide CTC system, improve station and terminal intermodal loading facilities and to complete the island wide Dispatching Wireless Telephone system and the optical fiber Network system. These projects will take about seven years and cost about 13.275 billion NT Dollars in total.
* Improvement of electrical equipment
  In order to ensure normal utilization of electrical facilities, enhance reliability of the power supply, maintain punctuality and safety, some old electrical equipment must be replaced. These projects will take about five years and the total costs about 1.351 billion NT Dollars.
* Diversification of operations and to increase revenues
  Taiwan Railway Administration will try to breakthrough the current legal restrictions and to make full uses of the resources currently available to diversify its operations such as leasing of offices, conference rooms, plain advertisements in cars and stations, automatic vending machines, etc.
* To enhance the land development
  TRA will sell its land lots now being vacated or not in use through open tendering and will relocate the Taipei and Kaohsiung Machinery Shops using the trading method to increase its non-business income.
