- The “Mid-Summer Formosa Train” activity at first was the train operation to celebrate the first anniversary on the conclusion of sister trains of CK124 of TR with Japanese C11 “SL Fuyu no Shitzugen Train” of JR Kushiro, Hokkaido. CK124 is now preserved in Changhua Fan-shaped Garage. In 2014 for the first time steam train activity was moved to organize in the East Coast, the steam locomotive used was the CT273, and the name of “the Mid-Summer Formosa Train” was kept. Thereafter every year the Mid-Summer Formosa Train is operate for three selected weekends in Hualian to Taitung in June to July, stop at certain features stations. The activity has since organized for five years. The Mid-Summer Formosa Train has successfully become the annual steam locomotive operation event of TR.
In recent years the core activity of the Mid-Summer Formosa Train is the incorporation of sightseeing resources, popular local scenic spots and features stations of the East Coast, carrying passengers from Yuli Station to Taitung Station, stop at Fuli, Tungli, Haiduan, Guanshan, Luye and Shanli Stations (there maybe slight adjustment for each year activity). With the train waiting for passengers, allowing visitors to visit by themselves famous scenic spots around the stations, such as the Fuli Station which is famous as the “Barn of the earth” which won the grand prize of architecture for the fourth regions across the Taiwan Strait of 2017. The Chishang Station which features a wooden barn style station. Walk to visit the old station and old dormitory of the Guanshan Station. Visit the legendary unreachable station - Shanli Station and the miniature white chapel in front of the station. The trip allows visitors to see all those natural scenery and humanity scenes deep in features along the line. Come and has a light travel of steam locomotive!
The Mid-Summer Formosa Train on return trip from Taitung to Yuli, travel agency planned three different three days two nights package tours, which combine with the riding experience of the Mid-Summer Formosa Train, allow visitors a variety of choices so as to have an in depth tour experience of the beauty of the East Coast.
